Discovery Center's Fishermentor Day 2005

Over 30 kids showed this year to head out on various waters in the region.  The Discovery Center is located in Manitowish Waters, right across from the Rest Lake boat landing, on Hwy W (just a couple minutes off 51).  Kids gathered at the Center at 7:30, boats went out at about 8:00 and returned to the Center around 12:00.  Team Retreat then prepared a traditional shore lunch, pictures and stories were shared, and prizes were handed out.  Most kids brought their fishing poles, but often guides supplied a few of their own for kids to use.  2-3 kids were in each boat, and the guides provided the bait, transportation to the lake of choice, and guided fishing for a couple hours in the morning.
 
We practiced catch & release, but of course encourage the kids to take photos.  The intent of the day was to take out youth that otherwise may not have the opportunity to learn from, or go out fishing with parents, other adults, siblings, etc.  And, the chance for them to visit the water with an experienced adult, particularly a guide, is something they will surely remember.  Oftentimes, catching fish is not the highlight... just getting on the boat can be quite a thrill for some of these kids.
 
It's a great event for the kids, and is a rewarding morning for the adults.
